Measure your blood pressure accurately, and control it, for a longer life!
World Hypertension Day (WHD) is observed on 17 May every year to raise awareness and promote hypertension prevention, detection, and control. The theme for this year is “Measure your blood pressure accurately, and control it, for a longer life”.
Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a serious medical condition that increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and other diseases.
It is a major cause of premature death and the main contributor to the development of cardiovascular disease. A systolic pressure of less than 120 and a diastolic pressure of less than 80 is normal blood pressure for women and men. Therefore, the normal/average blood pressure level is < 120/80 mmHg.
Objectives of the WHD:
The objective of this day is to inform Guardians about how to control their blood pressure and the serious medical complications it causes if it is not detected and controlled in time.
Reasons behind High Blood Pressure:
- An inactive lifestyle
- Having high-stress levels
- Poor dietary habits
- Increased salt intake
- Obesity
Ways to lower blood pressure:
There are a few ways to naturally lower your blood pressure without the use of medicines and medical procedures:
Exercise: Regular exercise helps to maintain a healthy body weight, which ultimately helps to keep blood pressure in check. Strength training, flexibility exercises, and aerobics can help you in the long run.
Healthy eating programme: Have a diet that consists of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grain cereals, lean meat, fish, low-fat dairy products, and low salt. Also, avoid added sugars as well as trans and saturated fats in your diet.
Do not smoke: Each cigarette smoked can temporarily increase blood pressure, so it is best to avoid all tobacco use.
Stop drinking alcohol: Consuming alcohol is known to raise blood pressure to considerably unhealthy levels. If you already suffer from high BP, avoid drinking alcohol or drink only in moderation (www.healthkart.com).
